Job description
This apprenticeship follows the Embedded Electronic Systems Design and Development Engineer (Degree) Standard, and leads to roles including designing, developing and fault-finding electronic circuits, devices, and systems.
As an Electronic Design Apprentice, you will spend your initial training at the Skills Academy producing several electronic projects to develop your skills and knowledge in basic electronic theory, components, basic circuit design, circuit construction and reporting. You will then complete a variety of 6-month placements at AWE. During this time, you will also attend college part-time to complete your HND.
On successful completion of your HND, in your final 2 years you will spend your time on further placements around the business, where you will also work towards your Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (degree phase).
You’ll begin your journey at our Skills Academy, where you’ll build several electronic projects to develop your understanding of:
- Component recognition and characteristics
- Circuit calculations and design
- Semiconductor theory
- Fault-finding techniques
- Testing and measurement methods
You’ll thrive in this role if you have:

Entry Requirements:
- A level in Maths and another STEM (Physics, ICT, Computing, Electronics) based subject or equivalent BTEC level 3 /HNC/HND/T level in relevant discipline
- 5 GCSE’s at grade 4/C or above including Maths and English
- Applicants must be aged 18 or over, as of 31st August 2026 due to security clearance requirements

Annual leave will not be granted from 1st September until 2nd October 2026 due to mandatory inductions you are required to complete as part of your apprenticeship. Any leave approved after this point will depend on the training provider requirements for your apprenticeship and must be agreed in advance.

These roles are governed by Health and Safety at Work Regulations and require all candidates to have an Occupational Health pre-employment medical held at AWE which follows the initial selection process. All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas.
