Software Apprentice

Job description

As a Software Apprentice, you’ll complete a 36-month programme designed to give you all the skills, knowledge and experience you need to begin an exciting career as a Software Developer. You’ll spend the first two years of the apprenticeship taking on various mentored placements and customer projects, before picking a specialism in your final year based on your preferences and business need. On completion of the course, you’ll have earned a BSc Hons degree in Digital and Technology Solutions and be a paid-for member of a professional organisation such as the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

You’ll split your time between studying at our partner university and on-the-job learning at our Hanslope Park facility, where you’ll put your theoretical learning into practise alongside friendly teams of software experts. You’ll become proficient across a tech stack that includes Python, C#, C/C++, Java, and Java Script, and deployment platforms like Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS). You don’t need any experience of these programming languages before applying – we’ll teach you everything you need to know with extensive coaching, mentoring and support right from day one.

And once you’ve completed the programme, you’ll be ready to kick-start your career as a fully-fledged Software Developer at HMGCC. Your journey doesn’t finish at the end of your apprenticeship – you’ll unlock a career that’s full of opportunity, development and creativity.

What you need

You’ll have (or be predicted to achieve by September 2026) 72 UCAS points and GCSE English language and maths at Grade C/4, or the equivalent functional skills at Level 2. Please note, prior to commencing this apprenticeship you should not have completed or undertaken a Level 4 qualification or higher in a software engineering subject such as computer science.

With your genuine interest in programming, problem-solving and technology, you’ll be curious about new possibilities and creative in your approaches. We welcome ‘what if?’ thinking – you’ll be willing to try new things and enjoy sharing ideas with those around you. You’ll enjoy working collaboratively and be keen to absorb as much knowledge as possible. And because you recognise the impact of what we do, you'll bring integrity and professionalism to your work as we seek to make breakthroughs together.

What we offer

You’ll be surrounded by a cohort who share your passion, as well as colleagues keen to give their expertise and advice. And, you’ll have a mentor for technical guidance as well as a buddy to help you settle into life here – you won’t be on your own.

You’ll also have access to all the benefits and facilities our staff enjoy, including 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), onsite counsellor and plenty of training and development opportunities to support your learning. We also have free secure parking on-site, as well as a free 24-hour gym, a café, restaurant and multi-faith prayer room.
