Manufacturing Apprentice

Job description

As a Manufacturing Technician Apprentice, you’ll do a mix of theoretical and on-the job learning, dividing your time between a training provider and various mentored worked placements in our purpose-built manufacturing facility. You’ll pick one of two specialisms – Electronics or Mechanical Manufacturing – and over the course of 42 months earn a Level 4 Production Engineering apprenticeship and a HNC in engineering.

In Electronics, you’ll learn to assemble and test components using various techniques including soldering, wiring and automated assembly. You’ll learn vital quality assurance techniques, and gain the skills needed to become a wiring and assembly engineer.

In our Mechanical Manufacture team, you’ll be trained in CNC machining (milling and turning), sheet metal fabrication, and 3D printing. You’ll also learn quality assurance techniques, including the mechanical inspection of parts, as you train to become a mechanical manufacturing engineer.

Whichever you choose, you’ll receive dedicated training, support and guidance. You’ll get involved with real projects and have access to bespoke equipment and cutting-edge technology as you learn to manufacture products that aid the national security mission. And your journey doesn’t finish when you end the apprenticeship – you’ll unlock a career that’s full of opportunity, development and creativity as a Manufacturing Engineering Technician.

What you need

You’ll have (or be predicted to achieve by September 2026) five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including maths, English language and a STEM-related subject. You could also have 2 A-Levels at Grade A*-C in a STEM subject, or a BTEC Level 3 Diploma (minimum 90 credits) in engineering.

Curious about new possibilities and creative in your approaches, you’ll have a genuine interest in how products are made and/or the manufacturing process. We welcome ‘what if?’ thinking – you’ll be willing to try new things and enjoy sharing ideas with those around you. You’ll enjoy working collaboratively and be keen to absorb as much knowledge as possible. And because you recognise the impact of what we do, you'll bring integrity and professionalism to your work as we seek to make breakthroughs together.

What we offer

You’ll be surrounded by a cohort who share your passion, as well as colleagues keen to give their expertise and advice. And, you’ll have a mentor for technical guidance as well as a buddy to help you settle into life here – you won’t be on your own.

You’ll also have access to all the benefits and facilities our staff enjoy, including 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), onsite counsellor and plenty of training and development opportunities to support your learning. We also have free secure parking on-site, as well as a free 24-hour gym, a café, restaurant and multi-faith prayer room.
