Job description
We are now looking for three Fire Safety Professionals / Junior Fire Engineers to join us on a full-time, permanent basis. Part-time working hours are available for these roles. We can accept part-time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 25 hours per week.
As a Fire Safety Professional / Junior Fire Engineer, you will support the BSR’s work to review, improve, and communicate fire safety standards for buildings in England.
Working closely with the Senior Fire Safety Technical Lead, you will help shape policy, research, and guidance, ensuring it’s based on robust evidence and aligned with government priorities.
You will scope and oversee research projects into key fire safety issues, contribute to the review and drafting of statutory guidance, and support government advice on emerging risks.
Your work will directly influence how buildings are designed, built, and managed, with an emphasis on improving safety standards and public confidence.
Additionally, you will:
- Manage relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
- Write guidance and policy documents and contribute to industry standards development
- Represent government at industry committees, events, and conferences
- Monitor and report on research outcomes
You can be based at any of the advertised locations, however, there will be the need for occasional travel to other HSE offices, including some potential overnight stays.

What we are looking for
- Practical knowledge of fire safety design and construction
- Sound analytical skills to identify underlying issues and develop innovative, sustainable solutions
- Proficient organisational and planning skills
- A relevant academic qualification at level 5 or higher in fire science, fire engineering, or fire safety or be on course for completing one
- Membership of an appropriate professional association such as the Institution of Fire Engineers, or Society of Fire Prevention Engineers (you will need to provide evidence at onboarding of your ability to gain chartered status.
