Litigation Caseworker – Appeals, Litigation and Administrative Review

Job description

Working with supportive colleagues at the Home Office, you’ll contribute to national immigration policy – helping to keep UK citizens safe and secure.

This role is an opportunity to work on interesting and challenging cases – it’s hands-on, purposeful work that comes with plenty of growth. You’ll be in charge of responding to pre-action protocol letters, drafting clear replies that explain the Home Office's stance, and getting input from decision-makers when needed. If a challenge goes to judicial review, you'll work with a wide variety of colleagues to give clear and timely instructions to government lawyers. You'll manage the whole judicial review process from start to finish, gaining valuable experience in handling litigation, preparing cases for court, and seeing them through to the end.

With this much responsibility, you’ll gain valuable experience in public service and immigration law and a unique perspective on legal processes. As your experience grows, you'll have the opportunity to expand your expertise. With your colleagues' support, you'll develop key skills like knowing which decisions to defend and which might need a second look, making sure everything's done on time and up to standard.

Training and development

After joining, you’ll take part in a comprehensive foundation programme that typically lasts around 12 weeks. This programme provides a solid base of knowledge across multiple areas of immigration law, as well as how to operate effectively in the Tribunal. On top of this, a mentor will support you throughout, and you’ll receive consolidation training alongside other continued learning. All of this will give you the right support and environment in which to increase your knowledge and skills in how to review, prepare and present Immigration Appeals.

What we are looking for

While you don’t need a degree in law, you will have a degree (at least 2:2) as well as a strong interest in immigration law. Resilient and highly organised, you’re able to work dynamically in a fast-changing and time-pressured environment. You’ll also be able to accurately analyse, review and consider complex legal arguments, as well as communicate with and influence a wide variety of external stakeholders.
