Why was the MA Arts, Culture and the Environment introduced?
The course was introduced in response to a world where environmental issues are more prevalent than ever, and solutions to those issues are more important than ever before. The university's provision across the range of arts and cultures subjects ensures that students are well placed to address the humanistic questions brought to the fore by the climate crisis, through an arts research and cultural lens.

This course is unique in the breadth and depth of academic expertise available to students. Academics from across the spectrum of arts and cultures disciplines, representing some of the leading academic thought in their fields, make up the teaching faculty. Through this interdisciplinary course, students will engage with both critical ecologies and creative ecologies.
This is complemented by access to some of the country's most vital cultural institutions, such as the Whitworth Art Gallery - home to masterpieces by Van Gogh, Blake and Picasso. In addition, the European Museum of the Year 2025, Manchester Museum, host practical elements of this course. Learning in and around these culturally significant institutions provides students with access to resources and experiences unavailable anywhere else but Manchester.
